Capoeira – Ages 6 to 12
Class details
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music. It was developed by African slaves in Brazil during the colonial period as a means of practising self-defence disguised as dance, to avoid detection by their captors. Capoeira is characterised by fluid, rhythmic movements, often accompanied by traditional Brazilian instruments such as the berimbau, the pandeiro and the atabaque. Practitioners, known as capoeiristas, take part in a playful and interactive ‘game’ in which they showcase their skills through kicks, sweeps and evasive manoeuvres whilst maintaining a connection with their opponent. It is not only a physical activity, but also an expression of cultural identity and community cohesion.
