Class details
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music. It was developed by African slaves in Brazil during the colonial period, as a means of practicing self-defense disguised as dance to escape detection by their captors. Capoeira is characterized by fluid, rhythmic movements, often accompanied by traditional Brazilian instruments such as the berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque. Practitioners, known as capoeiristas, take part in a playful, interactive “game” where they showcase their skills through kicks, sweeps, and evasive maneuvers while maintaining a connection with their opponent. It’s not only a physical activity, but also an expression of cultural identity and community cohesion.
